If you work in the gaming industry, the idea of Marketing bringing research to Product Development and the two groups working together to create a new gaming experience seems like a setup for a hilarious punchline. In this case it wasn’t a joke. It was the genesis of the product you see today. This information gave us some great insight that allowed us to develop the idea behind PAIN. This report also included information about what TEENAGE gamers want.

Now I am not a teenager. I haven’t been for quite some time. So I came to some conclusions:
  • I am not as “mature” as I thought I was.
  • Age has nothing to do with gaming requirements.
  • Seeing people “eat it” is funny

Whatever the case, the crew at Idol Minds had a concept that was well on the way to touching on all these points. It was this game concept called PAIN™. Talk about serendipity! It was only natural that we took this concept and made sure it had the right combination and then some. We were also looking for a unique product for the PLAYSTATION(R)Network. This concept had to be a unique experience. Something you couldn’t find anywhere else. We all knew PLAYSTATION(R)Network games need to have another requirement - Community.  Gamers like to share experiences (Ya think?)

Community is critical in this era/generation of gaming. We are all a lot more connected than we used to be. I would like to think that this is going to take game creation to a new level. This website is meant for YOU. It’s your forum to tell us what you like, love, hate, loathe so we can build the best PLAYSTATION(R)Network title ever. You are going to have the opportunity as a community to help us develop PAIN™ even more than what it is now.

Sony Computer Entertainment and Idol Minds started this project. I’m hoping you all will help us take it to another level. We’re going to be asking you all for a lot of input going forward. I told my bosses that you all weren’t shy, and that you would speak up when we put questions to you. You did a lot of it when I posted to the official PLAYSTATION Blog. I am hoping you will continue to help us out.

My name is Travis Williams and I am the Senior Producer of PAIN™. You are going to be hearing from me and many other people who help bring the PAIN™. I hope you have as much fun playing (and creating) PAIN™ as I do. I’ll see you on the leader boards.
Happy Holidays!

pain looks sweet

Posted on 11.24.07 15:17 PM by travis13245345

I can already tell this will be a GREAT game! I will be up a 12:01am on Thursday morning to purchase. This WILL be the game to make the PS store worth visiting. If Sony can create downloadeble games half this good, then we PS3 owners are in for a great time. I can't wait to fly butt first into an old lady (sorry seniors). Pain rocks!

Posted on 11.24.07 15:46 PM by mark

This site is hot yo!

Travis:
Please keep in mind that there are many of us in the 30 year old+ age bracket out here that probably grew up just like you: with our blistered hands clutching ATARI and then NES (even NES MAX) controllers, playing games into the wee-hours of the morning because we were finding, if anything: entertaining ways to DIE. We will definitely help with finding new ways to humorously annihilate our little sprites...

Not only am I in complete agreement with your 3 statements above, I applaud SCEA having the guts to stake this project and bring it to life for the PS3. Now, I am sure we are all waiting to play PAIN before handing out suggestions, but I can already see this game being a raging success... especially if new characters, game modes, environments, and options are able to be added later.

I can't wait to play! Bring the PAIN!

Posted on 11.24.07 20:28 PM by 247phil

I'm on board the PAIN train. I can't wait to play this game.

Posted on 11.25.07 00:44 AM by grooveska

Travis, it sounds like PAIN supports OFFLINE multiplayer for now; are there plans to expand the game to support online multiplayer as well?

Gord

Posted on 11.25.07 02:55 AM by BlueFrog007

so,where is this game??? it is 29 of november today............

Posted on 11.26.07 07:05 AM by Peter

Interestingly enough, this seems to be the latest (and I don't mean recent - but not "on time"Wink Thursday store release in PSN history. Typically the store would get updated in the wee hours of the morning, and now it is already the 30th here in Japan.

Any prospects as to when we can expect a store update?

Posted on 11.26.07 08:40 AM by endekks

It's noon on the 29th...i'm kinda getting pissed. Where is this game?

Posted on 11.26.07 09:07 AM by mike

I was a little concerned when I woke up at 2am, and there was no update. Like the rest, I am very excited to see the game released. Is there any definitive answer as to when we can expect an update to the store? I dont wanna work... I wanna play with the PAIN all day!!! Thanks, Bill H.

Posted on 11.26.07 09:39 AM by mercenary70

yeah this kinda sucks I wanted to play the game before work! looks like value must be behind this release haha :o) hope it's there when I get home or their be heads rolling :o) ahhh just get us the game PLEASE!!!!!!!

Posted on 11.26.07 10:08 AM by cubicalslave

Im waitng for the PSN update, hey Travis post this on the Playstation Blog too, many people dont know the site launched!

Posted on 11.26.07 11:28 AM by Captain-Fury

This must be a PSN SNAFU. Too bad, I was really looking forward to rocking this game all day.

Posted on 11.26.07 13:01 PM by ChiXiStigma

Guys, I can't think of any time the PSN store has been updated before 2:00 Eastern, can you? It's usually around 5-7:00 Eastern. We all want to play the game, we just have to wait for the usual store update to occur.

Gord

Posted on 11.26.07 14:45 PM by BlueFrog007

It's up and ready for download!

Posted on 11.26.07 15:51 PM by Trent

Looks like they've already tipped their hat as to the next theme; there's a sign for "Indoor Amusement Park" in the game.

It says:
Indoor Amusement Park
Coming Soon
Available only from
The Playstation(R) Store
Featuring Duece Drop,
Tilt-a-Hurl
and more
favorites!

The PAIN logo is on the billboard as well.

oh man PAIN IS DOWNRIGHT HILARIOUS!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted on 11.26.07 17:41 PM by elprimodebklyn

Whats up with the Characters.... saying i need to download something off my XMB??

Posted on 11.26.07 17:48 PM by Skater_Ricky

There is a Error Message trying to pick eaither one of Santa or Cookie character...

The message says: Error go to downloadlist under the transaction management on the XMB and re-download the content..

I have download this 3 times and still receive the same error message.

Thanks Ricky,

Posted on 11.26.07 18:26 PM by Skater_Ricky

Has anyone noticed that it's buggy? You can't pick certain characters. The christmas characters is blocked with a message "Error with content. View the download list on the XMB under Transaction Management to Re-download this content." I've downloaded the game 3 times and I still get this message. I think this error is preventing me from receiving medals in Spank The Monkey.

Posted on 11.26.07 18:32 PM by bones00

^^ I've also had this same problem.

My main issue with the game is that half the modes are only available in multiplayer... and I dont have anyone to play with. Frown

I was looking forward to the three multiplayer modes... but playing them in single player. I hope the developers make a patch that allow the three multiplayer modes to be single player.

I also hope the developers make it so we can play as the other characters that we're having issues with.

Also... how do I unlock the other costumes and the cow guy?! There is no mention of how exactly to do that.

Thanks.

Posted on 11.26.07 19:02 PM by Telekill1981

I agree with you Telekill. I want to know how to unlock the costumes as well and this game seems like only an offline multiplayer game unless I'm mistaken.

Posted on 11.26.07 19:05 PM by bones00

I really thought this game had online play too... it would be great fun to have a online play and i dont even see a leadaer board anywere in sight.. and i played the bowling and i didnt get what was up with the Square Triangle Circle things?? clueless i even hit some and it didnt make a diffence.. i played this game agaist my GF me and her couldnt figure it out.. if anyone knows how to do some please add me or message me on my PSN or email me at jamiethomas_04@hotmail.com thanks Laughing

Posted on 11.26.07 19:19 PM by Skater_Ricky

The trophy section says how to unlock more characters/costumes. I fulfilled the first trophy next to the one you earn after you complete the crash course. I'm going for the bombing the mascot one now.

Posted on 11.26.07 19:50 PM by bones00

The game loads pretty quickly. Don't be in a hurry to enter the mode. Watch the directions before entering a mode it helps a lot. In bowling one person tries to knock down the pins while the other players use those buttons to try to keep you from hitting the pins. All the distractions are meant to keep the other player from scoring.

And yes the trophy room tells you how to unlock all the characters.

Posted on 11.26.07 20:31 PM by travis williams

Hey Travis, Do you have any comment on the error message we're receiving as we mentioned above?

Posted on 11.26.07 20:33 PM by bones00

OK guys here is the deal the error that everyone is getting is most likely a christmas special. The developers most likely put it in the game so that around the holidays those santa characters will be unlocked to play.

Posted on 11.26.07 20:50 PM by I_Love_New_York

@I_Love_New_York -- If that is true, then the error message should say that and not state the there is an error with the content and a directive to re-download the game.

I posted the issue below on the Playstation Blog:

How come when I try to use the Santa and Cookie characters it tells me that the game is corrupt and I have to download it again? I followed that request, and redownloaded the game from PSN but it still produces the same result.

Steps to produce error:

1. Single Player Mode
2. Select any level
3. Select Santa or Cookie
Message on screen says that there is a problem with the application.

I just spent 10 bucks on this game through the Network.. and i can't even play a single player game? WHAT THE HELL IS THAT ABOUT? All it says on the MAIN MENU of the game is Single player, Multi Player, Trophy room, (all 3 of those modes have LOCKS ON THEM),Crash Course, Extras and Community..
1- WHY ARE THEIR LOCKS ON ALL THE GAME MODES? I want to play the single player, yet, it has a lock on it. i CANNOT play the Multi player, as it TOO has a lock on it, as does the Trophy room?
WHAT IS THE DEAL? PLEASE TELL ME HOW I CAN OPEN THE SINGLE PLAYER UP?
2-I AM ALSO HAVING PROBS GETTING MY GUY TO FLY ALL THE WAY UP TO THE BOWLING BALL, WHERE I HAVE TO GRAB IT.. ..I've been trying for a friggan hour, I am doing the tutorial.. I cant for the life of me, get my guy to soar up to the bowling ball and grab onto it.. what am i doing wrong?

Hello Hello, you have to complete the Crash Course first; it's the tutorial for the game. Finish that and it unlocks the other things.

Gord

Posted on 11.26.07 23:09 PM by BlueFrog007

Yo, Hello Hello. Scroll up and read. It's not as difficult to finish the tutorial as you think. Take your time and re-read the in game instructions. Single player is unlocked once you finish the tutorial.

Posted on 11.26.07 23:12 PM by Clinton514

Travis, is there something wrong with the Aftermath score updating? I've unlocked "Aftermath," but there aren't any scores in there. Is there a minimum score we have to get in order to register on the site?

this game is dumb fun at its best. Good work to eveybody involved in this. and one question? there's online multiplayer in this?

Posted on 11.27.07 00:20 AM by DrueFedo

Everything I read, including the devs comments on the PSBlog mentioned online multiplayer! Am I missing something other than the 10 dollars that used to be in my wallet? How is this even possible in the "NEXT GEN"! Disappointed!!

Posted on 11.27.07 10:01 AM by The_Dark_Knight

My bad ... it was the Associate Producer. Does this last paragraph of his post not lead you to believe there is online multi-player in PAIN?

"Check it out when it hits PSN, and if you want some multiplayer action, come see me. You bring the Kool-Aid, and I’ll bring the PAIN!"

Posted on 11.27.07 10:43 AM by The_Dark_Knight

Wow Travis. That didn't properly address any of the bugs that people are talking about.

Posted on 11.27.07 14:47 PM by DrueFedo

Trick to getting more distance / air time ... push the analog stick UP (even if your controls are inverted...which is kinda weird)...

This will give you more distance.

Posted on 11.27.07 14:56 PM by linuxguru

How can we get the aftermath???

This Game Rock but they should add more stages in like.....NOW because its always the same thing but its cool (cant wait to have T-Bone and Santa).

You can change the invert mode in controller menu.

Posted on 11.27.07 16:53 PM by BumbiQc

This game is great. I love the turtorial it is a great idea to get people used to the controls before turning them loose in the real game. You probably prevented a lot of people from giving up on the game too early by making them learn all the things that you can do in PAIN.

Great job Travis and everyone at Idol Minds!

Posted on 11.27.07 17:16 PM by grooveska

Keep up the great work, I know you guys are working on some kind of patch or something to address the few errors we have, I look forward to more content to come, Love the game. Throwing an old lady down the stairs into a subway train is priceless. One thing everyone would absolutely love it have, being able to save replays as videos or something. Skate does this, and so do a few other games, I have done some crazy funny things that I would like to show my friends or post online. Anyways, Again, awesome game!!!

Posted on 11.27.07 17:45 PM by Batfasturd

BumbiQc, you have to get over 1.5 million points, then "Aftermath" will be unlocked. It took me awhile to do.

Posted on 11.27.07 19:51 PM by damage420

I paid my $10 and the game is fun for a while, but it needs more content to be worth the cost. I hope that there is some more free content to come. If so, I will feel better about shelling out additional money for the larger additions.

Posted on 11.27.07 21:09 PM by slewis

Fun game, especially multiplayer. I'd like to see online HORSE. Also expansions should be cheap. We already paid about $3 too much considering the lack of content. Allow us to play music off the HD too.

are there more areas than just downtown?

Posted on 11.28.07 05:40 AM by DrueFedo

To the comment of elprimodebklyn, I dont see how you can justify spending your 10.00 on this game based on all the content that it comes with. And to Hello Hello I liked your comment. It is true. I mean i can understand a decent sized expansion pack for sale after a game has been out for a while, I can justify spending that for downloadable content. I can also justify paying for songs for rock band. But 10.00 for the crap we got in this game was down right wrong. I mean I dont understand how they could release a game like this. I started up the game and I wanted to play with my friend. She wanted to put Cookies, but o wait you couldn't. The solution that was given was to re-download the game, which obviously didnt work. Then I later found out that you have to download these characters. Ok well thats not cool, so i decided to play single player. Ok so it was fun. So now I'm ready to try a new level after about a half hour. O wait there are no more levels. So i checked. Nope. So lets see I paid 10 dollars for a single character to use(one unlockable) and 1 level. I mean come on guys honestly you can only knock a donut over so many times before I would want to start watching Barney. And I would prob get the same amount of entertainment. I mean the concept is ok, but this game could be really cool. But if you plan on building up your fanbase, I would suggest offering
some free content as a way of making up for the poor decisions you made from the start. I also believe that the only way this game has a chance to survive is through online play. Maybe think of something unique like a battle mode where you see who can cause more harm to someone by throwing the other in the air like the mime game or something. Im not trying to dog of this game, but I think i speak on behalf of the people who bought this game is that we are just going to simply need more from you guys. And some of that "more" is going to have to come for(I'd hate to say it) free.

Posted on 11.28.07 05:40 AM by [Adb]Bludshot

Hey there Travis (and the rest of the crew at Idol Minds)!
First of, I'd like to say how much fuin I've been having with PAIN. I bought it on the day of its launch and was hooked. I love the game's brand of humor and the great addiction caused by seeing Jarvis and Ed in pain. I'm also very pleased to see the community this game has and how your team actually listens and helps us out. (ie, the Santa/Cookie glitch)
Anyway, I was wondering if there would be a forum of any sort made for this game on this site. I think it'd be a great idea, and if you guys don't have the time I'm sure I could always set up an unofficial one.
Anyway, I hope to see you all on the scoreboards!

@-phampok-

How did they listen to the community and "help us out" (the Santa/Cookie glitch)...they did not help us out!

Have to pay .99 for each Character.
So it’s 1.98 for Cookie and Santa.

NOT a bug, NOT an error…just a sneaky move.

Tsk, tsk. (Any chance this is related to the ‘nickel-and-dime’ comment from Dylan Jobe (Warhawk)? “Not be some nickel-and-dime upgrade that takes advantage of our player community!!! (That’s my own personal opinion on DLC so I’ll get off my soapbox now)”

@linuxguru-
Maybe I should have edited my choice of words. What I meant was that they quickly fixed the misstep. Sure, it sucks that they cost money, but at least they made them available now instead of leaving the error message.

@-phampok-
I agree. At least it is better than the obscure and incorrect error message.

Posted on 11.29.07 11:28 AM by linuxguru

why is there just one map not 2....oh so ucan charge 4 it..why is there no multiplayer...oh ye so u can charge 4 that two...why the characters couldnt be bundled together 4 a 1$ or free..what a scam.. it would be cool if we had multiplayer or another map

Posted on 11.29.07 13:41 PM by scottsmokedro

So rumor has it that there is an amusement park level coming out. I am very excited but i just hope that this level will be free or not any more than a couple dollars

Posted on 11.29.07 14:29 PM by Ryan

i have yet to see any serious additions on psn for games that don't cost money people! (Online, Levels, etc!) All we can do is hope that they make the right decision and add the proper features when an update comes out which I hope is soon. Bring on the new levels, online and whatever else you guys can think of!!

thanks

Posted on 11.29.07 15:15 PM by brandon

Dear IdolMinds,
As you can see, the majority of the gaming crowd that have downloaded PAIN find it fun, but are thoroughly underwhelmed and worried about how much the actual game will cost. Don't kid yourselves- you charged us $10 for an incomplete game.
In general, we've been asking for some new levels, characters, and online play. I'm sure you are all great people and will supply us with these, since you've already said online is in the works and there's a billboard in-game for an Amusement Park level, but the big question is whether or not we'll be charged for them.
You already charge us a $1 a piece for the new characters, Santa and Cookie, which in general, didn't go over so well with us gamers. Imagine if you charge us per new level. Or charge us for online play. How can you sleep at night? If you want our trust, loyalty, and support, and if you want to bring in new fans, I'm afraid charging us so much will not work.
I may be being harsh here, but I suggest one of two things:
-Give us some free downloadable content to make up a bit.
-Make a nice package. I'm looking at Santa, Cookie, maybe someone else, and a new level, for $5.
And you better not charge us for online. That would be sick.
Well, that's all I have to say, and I'm sure many would agree.
What are your opinions? (directed towards IdolMinds and the gamers)

-phampok-

Posted on 11.29.07 23:18 PM by phampok

The $5 pack is not a good idea since some of us have already purchased Santa and Cookie...

If they were to do a "Good Will" package it would have to be content that is not available yet. Perhaps a level and two other characters....but even still, I think that will be hard to swallow for those that bought the game thinking that they would be getting what they expect from a game...multiple levels, multiple characters...but at least you would have possibly spent only about $12 .. so if they were to ask for another $5 for more content it would have to be substantial.

Of course, the normal cost of a "full game" is about 5 times what we paid so... I guess we DID get 1/5th of a full game...so are we still allowed to complain. (Possible sarcasm detected.)

To all the ubergeek-DLC-haters,

You are not paying attention! You have this all "ass-backwards".
If done right (and I think Pain / Sony will on this one), this new way of video game delivery will not be the "ruin" of the industry but the start of a fun new era. I think that we will look back on this "change" in a few years (maybe months) and be thankful it happened. I think ultimately we will get more value and fun for our money. Instead of going out and paying $30-$60 for a game that you only like half the levels / content on, you can buy only the content you want. You will not be paying extra for more "add-on's" which are usually just tracks in reverse or new skins for you car / character.

Remember what Bob Marley said... "if you don't know your past, then you don't know your future". Cases in point...

1. Anyone old enough to remember were told that VHS movies would "ruin" the movie industry. It didn't. It actually helped it. Same with DVD's.
2. mp3's / iTunes would kill the music industry. Nothing could be further from the truth. I LOVE only having to buy the songs I want and not having to buy the whole cd (if I choose)!, and this comes from a person that owned and operated my own CD store for 8 years.
3. and HELLO..., PC gamers have been doing something similar to this for years. They live to buy new content for their beloved games. The weird thing is that I believe most of the CONSOLE DLC haters are the same people that but the upgrades for their PC games!
AND...
4. You say 'Don't charge me for online levels"... what? Have you ever turned on a Xbox360? Hello...?

Be kind. Relax. Let it happen. My money (literally) is on the fact that it will work.

and...No more geek on geek violence please!

Well said, Doug.

I've said this before, and I'll say it again, the people who are moaning are the ones that didn't research the game before they bought it. I read every blog post and article I could find, and watched all the videos available online, and they all made it very clear that there was one level (Downtown), and that more were coming....for a price. I got exactly what I expected for the price I expected, and I know I'll be buying other levels for the game as soon as they're available.

I just ate a $10 burger in 20 mins, yet I'm still playing PAIN days later...

It would be nice to have a section of the website giving hints about where the extra action can be found.

For instance the grating in the subway that throws you back behind the slingshot launcher into the construction site.

If that's it for pandemonium, make sure there are a few more gems like that in the new content coming out later. (Chain reaction stuff.

Concentrate on single player content.

Tip for the community: THe layout is great, don't change it!
However you should allow user created forums, and the movies on this page cannot be watched on PS3, it's a link from the game to this page you should be able to watch the movies here, and one last thing which i'm not sure i really want but it would be cool. What about being able to save your replays from skate and upload it here to the community, a bit like Singstar or skate. And online play is definetely important it's good that you're working on it, damn good. And a lot of freebies for christmas. Maybe i'm asking for a bit much, but please consider some of these things. It will take pain beyond a game and make it a culture. At least i hope so...

Okay, first of all I'd like to say I really enjoy Pain and I think it's a great game to really show what the PSN is all about. However, there are some detrimental flaws in the game that just make it appear rushed out the door which I (and I know I'm not alone on this) think should be added to flesh out the experience.

Replay saves:

Honestly, when I found out there was a replay option for Pain, I was stoked. That feeling quickly subsided however, when I realized that I could not save my ridiculous chaotic feats. Why is this? Does it not defeat the purpose of having replay? If you guys added a save and share function to the replay component of this game, the community would unquestionably grow.

Multiplayer Online.. where is it?:

Alright, so one of the main reasons I purchased Pain was because of the promised online co-op and head-to-head modes. The game is absolutely a blast when you have friends over, but when no one's around it would be awesome to join another player/friend online and trash talk with a headset while flinging Jarvis, Cookie or Santa around.

The fact that these 3 key online/community building components of the game are missing, hinders its overall sheen. The game is great, you guys came up with something original but it still needs adjustment, as I'm sure every game is after launch.

I hope you'll actually consider these suggestions, because I truly believe that they'd add more to a game that has the potential to be the best downloadable game ever.

I see that high scores are in the 40mil plus range which is impossible with out cheating and i think they need to fix it.If you dont know it,all you do is fall on a slide and keep getting none stop OUCHes which gives a few thousand at a time.So to even have them high scores seems sad that it had to take the person hours to get it.I could be wrong so id like to see a video of proof.

It's not cheating, it's a glitch I believe. I pulled 25mil after getting hit by a train. I've never been able to duplicate it.
